Thank you all for your help. I got it off and it looks like it has mud in it. The thermostat was not lined up on the gasket properly. Can I just line it up right, clean it out and reuse. And would this possibly have been the cause of my car, that had coolent, over heating?

Put a new gasket and thermostat in. And get your cooling system flushed..And I don't mean a drain and fill. I mean hooked up to a machine and flushed. The shop may want to put a cleaning agent in before the flush. That mud your seeing needs to get out of there. it can cause havoc on your water pump and a new thermostat.

you are gonna need a new gasket, but that is cheap, and you can probably use the thermostat again if it isnt broken or burned. If it was bad, there would be no flow, so it would overheat. I had one go bad, i just took the whole thing out and didnt bother with one. It was pretty much a beater car by then anyway.

I would replace the thermostat, but you could test it. Put it in a pan of water on the cookstove with a cooking thermometer in it. Watch the thermometer & make sure the thermostat opens fully at the proper temperature.

It could. But for a couple of dollars I'd replace it. Sounds like thermostat wasn't opening so coolant overheated,,,,,,,,,

YOU MAY NEED TO FLUSH OUT THE COOLING SYSTEM AND REPLACE THAT STAT IF THE CAR OVERHEATED....YOU NEED TO GET THAT " MUD " OUT OF THE SYSTEM AS IT WILL CLOGG THE RADATOR AND HEATER CORE AND EVENTUALLY MESS UP YOU STAT AGAIN.....
