I'm going as Medusa for Halloween, and am curious to know - was she supposed to be gorgeous like the Sirens, or was she just plain ugly?

margarita: Medusa was a character of Greek Mythology who had a head full of snakes for hair (blond or brunette?) She, therefore, was not too "good looking". She turned her admirers into stone when they gazed into her eyes. The only Sirens heard were the emergency response units to pick up the dead-weight of her victims.

It depends upon what time frame you are refering to. Medusa was so beautiful that some foolish mortals dared to compare her beauty as equal to that of the goddess of beauty, and in the godess' temple no less. Therefore the godess of beauty, in a jelous rage, cursed medusa, changing her into the Gorgon, a half snake like creature with snakes for hair. All who look upon her would be turned to stone.

She was first the most beautiful woman in the world (supposedly), but out of a goddess's jealousy, she had her hair transformed into snakes. Myths tell of her hideousness, but it's unclear if that just refers to her hair consisting of revolting snakes or if her face was actually ugly. The thing is, how would anyone know, because if they looked at her they would be turned to stone!

For Halloween, I would recommend having a black/DARK-purplish black, slimming dress with jagged sleeves, a nice face with black & grey makeup, and hair of snakes. Keep the look dark, but not too gothic. Dark purple eye shadow with black eyeliner (thick) looks great for the Medusa look.

it was her eyes, it's all in her eyes. I dont know if the myth made her pretty or ugly, but make your eyes stunning, sexy and even get some fancy contacts if you can afford to. I get the feeling that she was ugly and that the Sirens just enchanted the seamen into her place and while still in awe .....got a look at her butt ugly head and bingo........the rest is history.
