Are you talking about a pioneer species? After an ecological disturbance, primary or secondary succession takes place. The first organisms to appear after the disturbance are pioneer species, such as lichens.

I would also say the pioneer species, in primary or secondary succession after a disturbance...ie a fire. These species tend to be grasses and mosses.
