Let point A = (3, -8) and B = (-13, 7)

Distance between points is (x2 - x1)^2 + (y2 - y1)^2

In this case it will be = (-13 - 3)^2 + (7 + 8)^2
= (-16)^2 + (15)^2
= 256 + 225
= 481

I won't solve this for you, because I think its your homework, and someone else will do it anyway. The easiest way to see how to calculate it is to plot both points on a graph, and draw a line between them. Then draw a line from (3,-8) to (3,7), and another one from (3,7) to (-13,7). Now you should have a right-angled triangle, and you should be easily able to work out the length of the last two lines you drew. Use Pythagoras's Theorem to calculate the lenth of the diagonal line.

hey
formula for distance between two points is squared root of ((x-x1)^2 +(y-y1)^2)
so (3--13)^2 = 16^2= 256
(-8-7)= 15^2= 225
225+256=481
squared root of 481 is approx. 21.9
the answer is 21.9 units

place these points on an XY coordinate plane.

draw a triangle using (3,7) as one point.

find the length of the hypotenuse using pythagorean theorem.

thats the same as the distance formula. Hope that helps you remember it.
