If people look a bit more deeply into their lives, most of the time when something has held them back from achieving a goal or desire, fear was at the bottom of it. Fear of failure, fear of change, fear of the unknown, fear of embarrassment, fear of loss, etc.

It is often peoples biggest stumbling block to happiness in life...if folks let fear rule their lives, they won't ever learn to be happy & they will spend their futures being robbed of joy.

Fear can be controlling...the saying is warning people to learn how to banish fear, or at least stand up to it, face it & then push through it...once they do, they are usually well on the path to achieving their deepest dreams.

It means that fear is the only thing you should be afraid of. What ever gives you fear is fear taking form. Like the dementors from Harry Potter, they are fear itself because they give you fear. Dementors are fear itself because they can take your soul.

"Fear is the mind-killer..." - Dune

Fear does awful things to you. It makes people overreact to a situation. It makes you desperate, it clouds your judgement, it the source of anger and people freaking out instead of finding solutions.

Fear handicaps people from thinking clearly, sitting down and solving a problem rationally. Most problems can be conquered, but not if you're freaked out. It causes people to react emotionally to a problem that can be solved rationally. It interferes with our ability to find solutions.

So the REAL threat is fear. That's what it means. Without fear, we can work out everything else.
