Overall criminals didn't last very long. They either became slaves, gladiators, or, most likely, were whipped with a cat-o-9-tails (a whip with barbs on it) or crucified. Some were skinned (though this was rare). Contradictory to popular opinion, virtually no criminals ever survived, and they couldn't buy their freedom iuntil they were very old and overworked.
Another method more common later in history but origionationg with the Romans is the concept of tying ones arms and legs to 4 horses and having them charge in opposite directions. This is not pretty.
Time period also plays a vital role, as well as location. In Britain, for example, punishments were not always as strict. Limited resources forced the Romans to keep as many people as they could to survive.

There are many ways a criminal would be killed. In almost all cases, the criminal would be locked in the town square for a week and tortured. The town's people would throw rotten vegetables and feces at the person, Then, the town's people would fill an arena (like the Colosseum) and killed the criminal. The people thought of it as a sport.
The actually killing was done in many different ways. It was anything from being attacked by an animal to being ripped apart by horses tied to your arms and legs, to being slottered. There are many other ways, I can't think of any of them off the top of my head though.

They made it a game and let people watch them try to live. ie: battle lions, or many other animals just to see if they would live if they did they would get round 2 and so on. not sure but i think that if they actually survived so many times they would be set free again

They were fed to the lions for entertainment. They also crucified them, and used flaming shirts.

Crucifixion, which you are familiar with, and my personal favorite: STAMPING, in which you are tied down and squashed with a giant meat tenderizer thingy. Hooray!
