He was a navigator and explorer commissioned by Spain in the late 15th century to find a shorter route to India, Indochina, and the Orient by sailing west, across the Atlantic, instead of sailing south and then northeast, across the Indian Ocean.

Columbus believed the circumference of the Earth was significantly smaller than his peers, and thought that contemporary ships would be able to hold enough provisions to make it to Asia by sailing west.

Fortunately for Columbus, he ran across the Bahamas before his ships ran out of supplies. No one is certain which island was sighted first, but we know he explored the coasts of Hispaniola and Cuba before returning to Europe.

For almost a decade, no one realized that Columbus had run across two unknown continents instead of Asia. He would later explore part of South America, in Venezuela, and the southern end of North America, near Panama, while looking for the Strait of Malacca, which was actually half a world away, in Indochina.
