I was just curious...if your car is on but you are parked or at a red light, are you still using gas? Also, if you just turn the key to the first switch for the radio to be on but not the car, is that using gas or what is actually on? Cuz sometimes if I just have it turned for my radio my car will start to heat up (my really old car I used to drive will sometimes overheat), and I have heard a lot of different things about if you use gas if your car is on but you aren't going. (Please no criticisms as a lot of people usually get, I'm just asking a question)

Also, if you DO use gas if you are just sitting there, is it more if you actually are pressing on the gas pedal...or the same? Seems like it would be more if you are pressing the gas pedal, but once again..not sure

If the engine is running, you are using fuel. Not as much as if there is a load on the engine, but you are still burning the gas. If you use the accessory switch, without starting the motor, you are not using gas, but are draining the battery. That will take fuel to power the alternator and fill the battery back up when you start the engine.

You are only using gas if the engine is running!l No you aren't using gas if the engine is not running, and the radio is playing, -- you are then using electricity!

The car will not heat up with out the engine running! If it overheats at idle while running, you have a cooling problem , - most likely the fan isn't doing it's job, (or the radiator is plugged up) , - If electric, it isn't turning on fan,-- if it is mechanical, the "fan clutch" may be bad (if it has one). Or there is an outside chance that the waterpump is not fully functioning, (I have seen them with bad impellers)_, but this is a vary rare occourance!

How old is your "really old car" ? My "really old car" was made in 1922, -- and it doesn't even have a waterpump!, (it does have a fan though)!

Yes you use gas any time your engine is running, not as much as when moving but still some.
If you only turn the key on and don't start the engine, you will use no gas, but will eventually discharge the battery, The heat you feel is probably due to the heater switch being on. It is connected to the key switch the same as your radio.

As long as your car is cranked, you are using gas--that's what keeps it going(if you are using a gas powered car, that is). If you just turn the switch on to hear the radio and not completely crank the engine, then you're just using the battery--no gas is used.

if the engine is running, you are using gas, even if you are sitting still. If the engine isn't on, you are using battery power. No gas is used then.
