Setting up Thunderbird to download messages from Yahoo! Mail is a little more involved. There are a number of ways to do it. My preference is to use the WebMail extension. You can read the tutorial at (http://webmail.mozdev.org/setup.html). If you rather try something else, I recommend YPOP's as a good alternative. Mozilla has a great knowledge base article on the various ways to setup Thunderbird to receive Yahoo! Mail. You can find the article at (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_webmail_with_your_email_client).

I have used both the WebMail extension and YPOP's successfully. If you have any questions, drop me an e-mail.

If you are using the free yahoo webmail account you can not use thunderbird or outlook express as Yahoo does not provide the needed servers to do this. You can try using the ypops program to port Yahoo webmail to an internal pop3 server on your computer but expect some serious slow downs on your computer is you do. http://www.ypopsemail.com/

To do it out of the box, you will need to upgrade your Yahoo Mail account to Yahoo Mail Plus. Then you will get details for using Yahoo with POP, and you will go into Thunderbird and create new POP Account using the settings provided by Yahoo.

Or you could dump Yahoo Mail and get GMail which has POP access for free.
