I work in a secondary school and I am for a uniform because;

It helps to prevent fashion parades.
It helps to identify children out on a field trip
It helps to show that everyone is equal
the families with a lower income don't have to compete with children who get all the branded names
children don't feel self-conscious about what they are wearing
Young girls can't attract unwanted attention

I could go on...

Yep, I approve of them. I wore uniform from lower through to upper school. I guess it got a bit annoying back then but now, I think it's a necessity for kids to wear. Uniform makes children look smart and presentable and doesn't make them worry too much about their appearance, since every boy or girl is wearing the same.

I'm with it to a certain extent but some schools just take the p**s.
At my daughters school they have to wear:

Black trousers/skirt
Black shoes (not trainers)
White polo shirt with school logo (purchased from school only)
Black sweatshirt with school logo (purchased from school only)

For PE it's:
Black shorts
Black tracksuit bottoms for winter (optional)
Black fleece for winter with school logo (optional) purchased from school only
Trainers

Now the stuff you buy from the shops you can pay as little or as much as you like and that's ok. But i really object to buying the stuff from school just because there's a logo on it. They charge a fortune for each item and you need at least 2 of each item so you've always got a clean one.
If they just let them wear anything in black and white (as long as it's sensible) then i don't see the problem. And if they want logo's then they should supply badges for us to sew on.

I don't think they should abolish school uniform altogether because it would segregate the ones with less money, i.e the ones from more affluent families coming to school in new clothes all the time and designer labels etc.

If i was a pupil, no doubt i'd be saying "abolish it", but i'm not.

I hope you see my point, and to sum up:
Have a school uniform
But keep it affordable

Yes I agree with kids wearing school uniform but what I'm p!ssed off with is having to buy all the PE kit ie tshirt ,shorts, jogging bottoms, and rugby shirt as well as a blazer and tie all with the school logo on.I could get the pe kit at less than half what the school charge at a high street store but the school won't allow it.To buy all this costs me about £200 as I've got 2 sons at this school. Then I have to buy shirts, trousers, coat, shoes, bag and stationary.
Me and my husband both work and we struggle to afford this,God only knows how single parent families manage this.

Firstly let me explain that I am very, very old...

And I'm torn over this question...

I won a scholarship and went to a Convent school (we could never have afforded to send me to) that had a very strict uniform rule - but my parents couldn't afford the 'proper' uniform and bought lookalikes...

...they thought nobody would be able to tell the difference...

...they could...

HOWEVER - if there had been NO uniform then I dread to think what I would have looked like.

So, I suppose I DO agree with school uniform - because, although MY uniform was wrong...my alternative was SO much worse!

Yes, because it is much easier as a parent when you don't have to argue with your child every morning about what to wear. It also stops your child wanting the top of the range clothes that a friend might be wearing if there wasn't a school uniform. It gives a sense of identity and belonging to the school community.

Yes. If not uniforms, standardized dress. There are so many distractions at school that keep the student from doing what they are there for, which is to learn. Uniforms make it one less. It's also less expensive for parents in the long run.

YES,YES,YES
You need to be thinking about your studies, you have enough distractions already, and obsessing about what to wear is another unnecessary distraction.
School uniform also provides group identity, respect for your school and yourself, and is intended to show that all pupils will be considered equal, no rich/poor divide.
One USA schoolgirl wasted so much time choosing her outfit she even posted a question on here to ask what she should wear!

Yes. But not so strict, my daughter can ruin a £50 pair of shoes in a couple of weeks but give her a pair of trainers and they will last a whole term!! The school say no so i have to fork out a fortune on bloody shoes, I really dont think thats fair. Her trainers were black and she wore them with trousers so you couldn't even see them. She's on her 3rd pair of shoes since the middle of August, I swear I just dont now what she does to them!! But yes, shirt, tie, trousers/skirt I do agree with.

yes and i understand why you ask!
for children its a part of identification, believe it or not from a psychological point of view they do need that association. as adults we dont like it but we must appreciate that we must go through that process in order to acknowledge individuality. i have been through that system and my mind is so wide, i love all ppl and have genuine respect of all. so yes but longterm plans and psychology of the human being is considered.
