I don't know where to find "the" summary, but here's one summary:
Kevan is the youngest and smallest of all the candidates for the next hatching of Ramoth's latest clutch. He's the son of a dragonrider. He has to put up with bullying from the oldest of the candidates, but is weyr raised and knows that nobody likes a tattletale. The dragonriders are discussing changing the age of the candidates, and Kevan is worried he'll be dropped from the roster, since he's the youngest. Kevan is bullied once too often and ends up breaking his leg. Poor guy-he's desperate to impress a dragon. He's told he'll have to heal first and he'll miss this hatching, but he'll be there for the next one. He's laid up in bed when the humming starts, and he realizes the hatching is imminent and all the other candidates are already there. He manages to hobble and hop to the hatching ground. He falls and hurts himself. He makes it to the ground, but all the eggs are hatched. There's one bronze hatchling though that has not impressed, and as soon as Kevan gets there, they impress each other, creating the telepathic bond for life that each dragonrider has with his or her dragon. K'van is now the proud friend of a bronze dragon.

I mean this in the least derogatory tone possible: READ IT!!! It is worth it. I don't know how old you are but I read it many many years ago in a middle school text book and fell in love with Anne McCaffrey! I loved the story.
