Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary: defines oppression as;

Unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power b : something that oppresses especially in being an unjust or excessive exercise of power.

I glad you said oppression than slavery, because people always confuse the two. Because you don't have to be a slave to be oppressed. You can be rich or poor it do not matter anyone can be oppressed. Anytime your a minority in the population then your always at risk of being oppressed. Black have been oppressed but not always the same way.

First it was slavery and oppression, then it was segregation and oppression. Now it can get tricky some blacks may not be aware of this but some are.

Blacks, in particular, receive outdated or far less aggressive treatment, even when their condition and health insurance are identical to those of whites. Doctors are less likely to perform high-tech, diagnostic procedures on Blacks and less likely to go to extreme measures to keep them alive if they go into cardiac arrest on the table. Whites are two-thirds more likely to receive kidney transplants than others. When hospitalized for pneumonia, whites are more likely to receive intensive care than Blacks are.

Blacks were 210% more likely than whites of comparable credit to be rejected for mortgage. It is estimated that the current generation of Blacks will lose about $82 billion in equity because of institutional discrimination; the next generation of Black homeowners will lose $93 billion.

Black children are almost 3 times more likely than white children to be labeled mentally retarded. Blacks are 2.5 times more likely to be placed in remedial or low-track classes. Even when Black students show potential that is equal to or above that of whites, they are 40% less likely to be placed in advanced or accelerated classes.

Blacks, who comprise only 13% of the population and account for about 13% of drug users, constitute 35% of all arrests for drug possession, 55% of all convictions on those charges, and 74% of all those sentenced to prison for possession. Blacks are incarcerated at a rate that is more than 6 times that of whites.

Obviously Samm dosen't know what he is talking about "still poor and starving in Africa". This is for Samm

A Black baby is more than twice as likely as a white baby to die before its first birthday, yet babies of largely poor West African immigrants survive just as well as whites. 1 in 7 Black babies is born with a low birth weight, which makes them 40 times more likely to die. Blacks with prostate cancer are 2-3 times more likely to die than whites. African-American men have the highest rate of prostate cancer in the world. For African Americans, high blood pressure is epidemic. It's the severe high blood pressure that leads to greater rates of stroke, heart attack, and kidney failure. Further, for African Americans, the darker the skin, the higher the blood pressure. Africans generally have low blood pressure.

Blacks health score in America is much lower than those in Africa. The percentage of African Americans in Poverty vs African, African America are the same or worst.

No I don't, I will try to explain as best I can. There are many poor ghetto black male and female with the thug gangster attitude, who are into gangbanging and drug dealing. The excuse most frequently used is that they see no reason to work for minimum wage when they can sell drugs and drive expensive automobiles. Most are, at best, marginally educated. The oppression that they must bear is their own ignorance and of their own making. On the other hand there are male and female blacks from the same ghetto who come from caring and loving two parent homes who know the secret of success. they become highly educated and enter the corporate world and other fields such as science disciplines and they make their presence known. They become the emerging black middle class and the neuvo riche blacks. For example, Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson, a black man that I admire very much, has a doctorate degree in astrophysics, is director of the Hayden Planeterium in N.Y. and a guest lecturer at Princeton University. He appears frequently on the PBS Nova series. He is a rising star in his chosen field and will not be denied. I might add that he was chosen as the sexiest scientist by People Magazine. I can name many more, but I think you get the idea. Opression has become a very tired excuse and a cop out. Many black people have discovered the secret to success and have proven, by their positive deeds and accension to lofty positions, that it can occur with a little personal inititive.

In a way... but not as much.
A lot of black teenagers' SAT scores are not as high as white kids.
Some black kids are not accepted into colleges or get into good schools.
- yes, some are in the MIDDLE CLASS, but there are a select few who live in projects or something like that.
Those kids are left out on opportunities.

but then again they can always work hard. There was this one doctor from Harlem and became the best heart surgeon in the US.

Well my family CHOSE not to live in oppression during the potato famine in Europe and immigrated to America to start their lives all over again. As did my Husbands from Germany and Luxembourg.

African Americans have to choose their way out of oppression. The choices we make in life puts us in the place we choose to be. Choose study, good language, education to get ahead in life.

My family all chose to immigrate to American in the late 1700's and early 1800's to become Americans and yes I know that African Americans didn't choose to come here.

They were brought here in slavery. But that was 200 years ago. Would they be happier if they were still in the starvation and poverty and war zones of Africa??

I don't think so.

Stop dwelling on the past and work your way to a prosperous future. I didn't say rich, just more prosperous.

It depends on where you live. In Atlanta you might be treated more equally. Mexican immigrants are being oppressed.
