Sound to me like you want to remove an interior load bearing wall on a lower floor and replace it with a structural beam in the ceiling. Do you have any construction or engineering experience?
The factors are the load to be carried and the span of the beam. For residential floor construction the loads are 15# per sq. ft. dead load plus 50# per sq. ft. live load. Figure the amount of floor area to be supported. Dont forget any additional floors above. Then add dead load for wall and ceiling construction above, also at 15# per sq. ft.
Use microlams or LVL's for this job. Go to the specifiers guide on this site:http://www.ilevel.com/aboutilevel/technologies/MicrollamLVL.aspx
Then use your figures to size your beams.

this is not an easy job. but it takes the right tools. recently i have seen -- a contractor specialized in drilling behind the support wall -- and digging in metal barriers...that is an excellent idea so it strengthens the wall structure -- there after they pour cement -- as you know. the key to all this is to find the right contractor who has the equipment -- ask details on what they will do exactly and thereafter assess his ability. good luck you always need it in construction jobs.

Assuming you mean the foundations need underpinning you need an on site assessment by a qualified builder who is willing to rebuild your house if he gets it wrong PS make sure you've got that in writing before the work commences !

Have a couple builders or handymen give you a bid, so you know what materials you are looking for and then go price them yourself.
