The Dark Tower series by Steven King is captivating, The first book is a little slow, but it is also the shortest. You'll find yourself flying through the next six books in no time.

Read the Stand first. Although it is not part of the series, it is a great introduction to King's style. To me, it is one of the best fiction stories ever written.

It's a toss up between Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged (I've read it three times) and Stephen King's Dark Tower series. I have never been so emotionally attached to characters before as in the Dark Tower and at the end of book 7 I cried my eyes out the entire night. It's only been a year and a half since I read the series and I am ready to read it again. I also love The Basic Eight by Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket... but this book is NOT for kids). It's the kind of book where the second you finish it you feel the need to read it again immediately and look for clues that would lead to the surprise ending.

It's a four way tie for me:
1. "The Running Man" by Stphen King. It doesn't get as much attention as his other books, but it is a fast paced story, extremely well told.
2. "The Legend of Huma" by Richard Knaack. Yes, it's filled with every horrible cliche' you can imagine, but it is still one of my favorite books ever.
3. "Horton hears a who" by Suess. For a kids book, this is a pretty dark tale of an almost-genocide, stopped by one person who cares enough to fight for others.
4. "The monster at the end of this book" Once again, a kids story, but I laugh out loud every time I read it. Grover is the man.

I love Cherry by Mary Karr... def. check it out if you're into the hippie generation. Also up there with it is Tortilla Flat, I think it's John Steinbeck's first short novel, actually. It's a must for any Steinbeck fanatic.
