Here's some history on the electoral college.

This may be one of those things the founding fathers had right back then but today the same arguments don't work. Also, in reading the link, you'll see they considered the popular vote.

If you are referring to "popular vote" by a majority of the populous, the U. S. has never elected a president on that basis. You are deluding yourself if you think that U. S. presidents are elected by a majority of the "populous". U. S. presidents are elected through power of the House and Senate, secured by money filtered through high-profile lobbyists supported by "captains of industry".

Our early presidents may or may not have been aware of the manipulation that transpired to achieve their presidency; but, you can be assurred that later presidents were well aware of who got them elected.
