I think some of the best and scariest movies, that weren't gross were those old black and white films, like Frankenstien with Boris Karloff, Dracula with Bell Lagossi, and the Werewolf with Lon Chenney. I think the newer ones like American Werewolf in London and Alien will scare the heck out of you, but are also pretty gory.

the ring, saw, and what lies beneath were pretty good. the grudge is probably the scariest out there....but was a bad movie.
