My ninth grade class is supposed to write a letter to a soldier in Iraq. We have to relate the experiences of Odysseus, the epic hero, to that of the soldiers'. We can't be harsh and tell him things like while Odysseus was gone, hundreds of guys tried to take his wife. That wouldn't give the soldier hope and definately wouldn't make him happy. So how can I make the relations to Odysseus's experiences not harsh and somewhat humorous?

In the letter, try and show odysseus' accomplishments and relate them to the soldier. Odysseus was a hero in "The Odyssey" so try to incorporate that fact into your letter, maybe say, "America's soldiers are heroes just as Odysseus was a hero in The Odyssey." and then give some examples of that. If you know any of the soldiers heroic stories, try to make them tie into what Odysseus did in the book...I had to do something similar to this in english last year...remember just to use a lot of symbolism, teachers like that and it makes for a better grade.

I dont know but you can just say something friendly. My brother said he likes getting letters but he has to read them on the toilet.
