eh? the same as if the light is on! just your eyes can't focus an image of an object if there's no light reflecting off it so appears there is nothing there. like when you can't see the end of your bed in the dark but you know it's still there when you clobber your toe on it!! lol!

you ask what is in the dark? well when you close your eyes anything can be in the dark, whatever image comes into your head.
