Marble is a metamorphic (= altered) form of limestone. The metamorphosis (= alteration) occurs when movements in the earth's crust put the limestone under great heat and pressure.

Marble is a metamorphic rock, Metamorphic rocks are rocks that are formed when a different type of rock is put under extreme pressure and/or heat causing the physical characteristics of it to change.
