I have a 1998 Subaru Outback Impreza. The check engine light is on (it has arbitrarily gone on and off since i got it at 75 K miles). It now has 160 K miles on it but runs great. Recently, it has starting idling around 500 rpm. It flares to 2000 when i turn it on, which I have been told is good and normal, but it is supposed to idle at around 750 according to my mechanic. What causes a low idle speed on this vehicle?

How is your gas mileage? When the engine light is on get it scanned. You either have a faulty sensor, or a code stored in memory. You should also get you car serviced. Follow the schedule in the service booklet. take the mileage and multiply it by 2 or 4 whatever is closest to your cars mileage and get that service done. At that mileage get the timing belt checked as well.

!st what is the code for the check engine lite and why havent you fixed?May be a worsening problem that is causing the low idle.

A good tune up and clearing the memory on the computer may help. A clogging fuel filter, dirty air filter or bad O2 sensor may also cause this. I have replaced many O2 sensors on these cars for Idle problems.

You should also check, or have someone qualified to do so, check for water or condensation in the ignition system. Could cause the problem. If the cars bucks and is hard to take off when its cold, then its even more likely this is your problem.

i might want to signify that you GET YOUR automobiles computer SCANNED to ensure in basic terms WHAT the project IS FIRST SO then you actually've gotten some idea what's faulty besides as what to assume. try searching AN autonomous automobile restore shop rather of THE broking OR ANY departmental shop because you'd be common extra delighted with the personal service that you'll obtain.
