it was just a leg brace i dont think it had a special name and he had 2 wear it because his spine was crooked as a politician as it said in the movie

It was a leg brace from what I understand and in the time it was filmed it (set in the 50's initally) was more than likely to be polio...but he sure had a miraculous recovery!
