Listen, I really do not want to sound rude, I am not intending this iin a rude manner, but the instructions tell us to first ensure we have absolute compatability with our hardware and progams before downloading and installing this new OS. If it is not compatable it simply is not going to work. I can only advise you to remove the incompatable programs and replace them with compatable programs of equal or better quality as the ones you have been using in the XP OS. Determining compatability is the best bet in ensurring the least amount of problems when migrating into a test enviroment. It is great to hear though that this IS a test enviroment and not your actual working computer. Whew!

Now, my next advice is to go to the Vista tech newsgroup and ask this question there. It is the best option in working with the BETA Vista. I have yet to do so as I am not ready yet to go through all the compatability testing as I have a wedding upcoming really soon. I wish you much luck and fun, in playing with Vista. I am really looking forward to doing so myself. I envy you your ability to do so now and not have to wait like I do! ;-)

Sorry I can't offer more assistance, but in a few months I will be able to! Smile Seriously, I am sorry, I only know that compatability is a huge issue and of prime importance before migrating to Vista. It has so many diffrences than XP, it is just crazy! All GUIs are now modules, no more dos, and all is in images. I hear it is a geat OS, but many will be surprised how different it really is underneath the interface. I hope to jump in and get my feet wet as soon as possible.

Good luck and have a great day!

p.s. Ignore that rude person who screamed at you with caps lock on. Ok, now, a computer may state "Vista Compatable" but that is only the hardware not the software installed. Vista is going to require a lot of new software programs which are compatable with the Vista OS. While some will be backwards compatable, mostly it will be Microsoft Programs such as the Office 2003-200-Office XP-Windows ME-Windows 98, etx, and I am not sure about the ones older than Windows 2000. One issue I have with this newest OS, is Microsoft trying to force people to have to purchase the latest round of software along with the OS. As I said I am sure that Office 2003 and Office 200 and Office XP will be compatable, along with other XP software, I also know that Microsoft is forcing other software venders to come out with Vista Capable software or it will not receive the Vista Compatable sticker. Which will be a major problem for them when it comes time for users to buy software programs for Vista. So, even if the case says "Vista capable" that so does not mean the software inside is "Vista compatable". Hope this helps some. Go to the Vista Technical support website and newsgoups, they can assist you the best. Good luck and please do have fun with Vista.

HUMUNGUS TIP!--TAKE OFF VISTA NOW UNLESS YOU HAVE A HARD COPY OF IT!--Do not install anything unless its online only because there are TONS of bugs and holes for people to easily get in! Unless you own a disk of VISTA then delete it now and reinstall your old XP Proggraming! When it comes out on disk buy it then and make sure your computer is VISTA compatible. All computers have a sticker saying --Designed for- whatever--if it has a black area and inside is Windows Vista Compatible. It will run but if not...get a new computer ASAP.

I know that’s not what you asked, however personally, besides what already has been said, for security sake when using Vista I would make sure it is safely sandboxed with Parallel or VMware before letting it connect to Internet (giving your PC has substantial recourses)
