How do you get ipod itune's store to work?

I just got an ipod this weekend for my birthday and dowloaded itunes, from apple.com, so I could download music and other stuff for my ipod, but everytime I try to go to itune's store it says an error has occurred, please HELP ME!!!!

Well if you just got an iPod then it must have come with an iTunes software CD
just put the CD in and download that version it always works for me
Also make sure you have an internet connection when trying to open it
