~America's Working Poor~

Cereal or a cheese sandwich again tonight.
Milk's almost gone.
Amber needs fieldtrip money tomorrow
and a new pair of shoes.
No dime to spare
and next paycheck's a week away.

Worked all day long and still
Had to rob one bill to pay another.
It is never enough.

Billy wants to join karate and t-ball,
And cannot comprehend the cost of it all.

A mother's tears....
A father's private shame

If simple wishes came true,
Christmas would come this year, too.

Brings back memories of the days when i was working two jobs bringing up my children on my own. They both did really well and many years later ... Now they have their own lives, good jobs and i'm better off ... I'm glad we made it if i also miss those days at times! The closeness there was between us ... No one could buy it! By teh way i was in Britain not in America! But yes your poem depicts these days pretty well!
