The best movie I've seen is "Saving Private Ryan".That movie is so realistic. But it is really violent but then again that's what makes it so real and a great movie.

vanamont7 is right noe of us have been in common (maybe some of us have). So I don't really know how war is but Saving Private Ryan just seemed so realistic to me.Especially the first 25 minutes of the movie. It was stunning to me as how half the people were killed in just trying to get to the beach.I mean most of them hadn't evn fired a shot until they got in close.

There are a lot of them; Patton, Apocalypse Now, The Big Red One, The Great Escape (ok, technically not a war movie but it's set in a WWII stalag), Kelly's Heroes, A bridge too Far, The Bridge over the River Kwai, Sands of Iwo Jima..... This list could go on for some time!

#5: Battle of Stirling Bridge - Braveheart
Massed heavy cavalry against armed footmen, screaming Scotsmen, weapons flying, arrows descending on the ranks of men, inspired speeches, vast armies running across fields - no matter what you think of the movie as a whole, the large battle scene in the middle is certainly dramatic.

#4: Opening Battle against barbarians: Gladiator: the onslought of barbarians against a disciplined roman legion, the arrows, flaming ballista, and flanking attack by roman cavalry...good cinematography

#3: Red Army Attack at Stalingrad - Enemy at the Gates; men sent into the attack without weapons, knowing they'd have plenty when their comrades fell, the Commissars gunning down all those retreating...great battle in the ruins of Stalingrad.

#2: Attack by Tiger Tanks - Saving Private Ryan, most pick the initial D-Day landings as the best part of the film, which was realistic, but the final battle with Tigers was far more intense.

and the #1 War Movie:

Longstreet's assault on Cemetery Ridge led by Pickett - In the movie Gettysburg, the use of re-enactors and actual locations contributed to its feeling of accuracy, the long battle lines with battle flags tipped forward as they advanced...splendid! Gushing holes of humanity from the Union artillery, the noise and smoke, and still they came...a handful reaching the copse of trees in the center....

It'd be difficult to say. Off the bat I'd have to say ' Platoon '. Nothing pretty about it but great filmmaking communicating a horrible fact practically as it is. None of us has been in combat. We don't know the full extent of that horror. General Sherman had a face and a comment that told volumes on both. " War is hell. " I'd also point out the general disposition of a film like ' Apocalypse Now ' really communicates the scope of utter chaos in war. The anarchy, actually.
' Full Metal Jacket ' mixes the banal pointlessness of war and the assumed bravado posture of life in the ranks under fire. First vote stated, I doubt you'll find it neatly under one roof.

Glory (1989), the Civil War movie starring Matthew Brodderick, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman. The music was beautiful and the fighting scenes were very realistic and moving.
