Without knowing your configuration and specifics on AOL (which I don't use), it sounds like you are using DHCP (whether on purpose or via AOL is another question). Whenever you connect, you'll get a new IP address if the settings are configured that way.

So while the answer is yes, they do actually show your IP address - that doesn't mean it will be the same 5 minutes from now if you reconnect.

There are two types of IPs -- a static IP or a dynamic IP. A static ip VERY rarely given to the average person. It means this is your IP and it will never change. However most people have a dynamic IP and it changes often - each time you reboot your computer.

So today your IP could be 123.11.1234 and tomorrow it may be 123.11.1114.

If you want a static IP, contact your local ISP and request one however there is typically an extra cost involved in such a request.

You're using DHCP -- dynamic host control protocol. That means either your wireless router or your ISP (AOL in this case) is assigning you a different IP address every time you get on-line. That's perfectly normal, and in fact preferred in many cases -- nobody can directly attack your computer more than once that way :)

If you want to check what your IP address is, go to the command prompt - (go to Start, Run, type cmd and OK)
Then type ipconfig and you will see what your current ipaddress is :)
