I just came back from Iraq. I was there for 12 months conducting all kind of infantry operations -mostly cordon and searches, and convoy operations. US forces are in Iraq to help maintain some stability and give time to the police, army, intelligent and government services to organize, train and become functional. This is turn will allow normal governance, commerce and culture to begin thriving. The US government took over all government functions once it invaded and dismantle the army, allowed the country's infrastructure to be looted, and reorganized the whole government. If we look at other chapters in history, this whole exercise in democracy, has taken other countries and cultures (including the US) decades - if not generations- to reach fruition. For whatever reasons the US invaded Iraq, now that it is there, the US own the responsibility to ensure that we don't leave a bigger mess than the one we had at the beginning. Best case scenario: We leave, Iraq lives happy ever after and becomes a thriving democracy and an example for other nations. Worst case scenario: US leaves, civil war ensues; power vacuum develops and Alkeida/Taliban/Iran comes in and control Iraq and ALL of its incredible natural and people resources for what ever means. So instead of getting rid of a dictator that was 99% contain, we created a new dictatorship that is radical, anti US and completely uncontrollable politically, financially or militarily. That is why US troops are still in Iraq.

Because to pull them out at this time would open Bush up for the most disastrous failure of judgment in our history. He must wait for some miracle of some kind. Perhaps Iraq citizens will stage an all out demonstration for our troops to go. If this would happen Bush could claim he tried his best to help them and wish them the best.

It takes about 6 months to properally train the Iraqis and they have to be replaced when they run away or are killed. Meanwhile the U.S. has been handing back land to the Iraqis. Officially they will have control of 50% of their land by the end of the year and I think 75% of their land near the begining of next year (maybe March 2007). Meanwhile the U.S. military is squeezing into a smaller and smaller area.

You wanna know why??? It's because of Bush's overinflated ego! He says that they are there to root out terrorism. Maybe saddam was an accomplishment... but there is no major terrorist groups operating out of Iraq. If anything... the invasion has casued more terrorists to spawn then reducing them. Also, there is the massive bloodshed, murdering(Haditha killings) etc.

That's a very good question. Someone answered that the "job is not done yet." What "job" are they talking about? I THOUGHT we were over there to get Saddam outta power. Oh, we found him? Okay, then I THOUGHT we were over there to re-build Iraq. Oh, we keep bombing what we've re-built? Okay, well, then we're over there to help them put a constitution in place. Oh, they have something like that already? Okay, then we're over there to protect the people of Iraq. Oh, people are still dying everyday by random acts of violence that "we" are not able to control? Okay, then we're over there to.....WHAT ARE WE STILL DOING IN IRAQ?

We are there to help them rebuilt there country I guess or maybe its because Bush just wants more of out troops to die. All I know is they should be home and not dieing for a country who doesn't care enough about themselves to help themselves

Seriously, I don't know what they are doing in Iraq in the first place. If they left now, the Shi'ites would take over after enough blood had been spilled.

It's all about the oil. A soldier told me they are building a huge pipeline to get the oil from one place to the other. Can't remember the details, because I wasn't interested. I always knew it was about the oil, not terrorism.
