Because he is trying to energize the republican base. Hillary (or any woman) as commander in chief scares the hell out of conservatives, and they will mobilize to stop her. In 2004 they said that if Kerry won then gay people would be able to get married, so millions of GOP faithful flooded to the polls to protect marriage. Look what we got out of that one.
