No, it's not real. The whole thing was a hoax. It was written and directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez. They casted the film with unknowns: Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams. The movie is fake, but there does exist the legend of the witch.

no... if u watch it on dvd and listen to the commentary. the director talks about how they were like 10 or 20 feet away and throwing rocks and sticks into the woods. and the house in the end had a boombox with the sound turned up. plus some of the actors played in vary few commercials and had really small parts in movies. plus they admitted a few months after the movie was made that it was a hoax

some of the interviews are real tho.

No, it was not real. It was done by some film students who then made a bunch of $. No family would allow the murdering of their kids to be shown in movie theatres. Here is the official site....

The directors were just very smart to create a buzz around their movie by trying to convince that it was a real story!
They admitted that it was a prunk!

It was a real movie but not reality...was a small indie film that made it big.

its the absolute worst movie ive ever seen...man what a let down i felt like i just got kicked in the crotch, cant believe people dident tell others it was so bad instead of acting like it was scary
