Society sees marriage as a loving, committed, monogamous relationship between a man and a women. The purpose of this union is to share your lives together and raise children to lead the next generation of our world. That is probably pretty text book. Of course there are lots of opinions on this question. In truth a marriage is a choice that people make to share their lives with someone they love. I suspect that in the next 10-15 years that will come to include same sex marriage as well, but for now society for the most part is not ready to accept this.

Society doesn't expect anything from marriage. Divorce is more of choice and not a last resort as it should be. Society feels that if it doesn't feel right, to move on, forget the vows.
Society expects married people to pay taxes, have kids, and pretend to not be dysfunctional. Most families are.

I guess it would depend on which section of society you are discussing. The gay community, the religious community, the liberals or just general society as a whole? I think most people get married for love and money. Someone to share the burdens of life with and the joys as well. It can be a beautiful and harmonious union or it can be a raging tornado. Sometimes in both cases the love and the relationship are equally strong and they both survive. Sometimes that is not the case and they die. I think society as a whole still covets marriage and desires for it to be successful. Okay that is philosophical as I get today. Hope I have got your mind running.

With the divorce rate approaching close to 60%, it's obvious that society doesn't expect much.

they expect law abiding, tax paying citizens to have babies ( but not too many) treat each other with love and respect and love each other unconditionally. to learn what society wants..try examining different vows used in different marriages. see what different religions use as opposed to others. hope this helps
