This might come as a shock to you, but you should avoid commercial giants entirely. That's not to say that Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson, Yellowcard, My Chemical Romance, Justin Timberlake, Simple Plan, Jojo, Ciara, Pharell, Chingy, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Carrie Underwood, and Panic! At the Disco are not without talent...oh wait...yes they are. Avoid all those stupid up-and-comings you see on TV. Ignore the VMAs, TRL, Top 40, and Now That's What I Call Music! Volume 21. If you have any real passion for music, you'll revert back to the classics and explore radio stations (like last.fm as opposed to commercial radio). Pick up an album that not everyone likes and try to have something all your own. Listen to an album without knowing the name of who made it, just the sounds that are on it. Learn to be attracted to music and not a frivolous persona. Until you've cultivated the art, don't pretend.
