They underestimate my gas bill for 4 and half years and only realise cos I rang up and read them the meter. It then takes them 6 weeks to bill me and they send me a £3300 bill. I then realise they've charged me at current rate of gas so has now been amended to £2300. I've wrote 2 letters about this and been ignored. Then get a letter from their debt people to take me to court so rang them up and they said it was an error. Still had no reply to my letter - in one letter I told them I had contacted a solicitor to try and get them to drop a part of the bill. They read my meter a year ago and noticed the problem and thought they'd read it wrong leaving me another year underestimated. They have been truely appalling., Rang today and the girl said it was bad no one had got back to me & said actually it was law they could only back bill for 2 yrs so its being looked at for the third time. If I'd paid the 1st bill I would have been well conned any ideas on how to proceed with this???

as a rule i switch energy companies every 6 months, for one you are up to date and also you get the best prices. It only takes a phone call and you save £££££s its the same with every business they take the pee out of the "loyal" customer and give the middle people "the constant switchers" the best price.
anyway in your present predicament i would switch asap, as they are clearly fleecing as long as you pay something they cannot take legal action, and as the bill is in dispute, they do not have a clear case of non payment (it would get thrown out of court with what you have already said)
There is also a website where you can check the latest prices.

You have a problem. It is their error but they still have the right to charge you going back 2 years because when you get the bills they say they are estimated and you have the opportunity of reading the meter yourself and telling them the correct figure which you should have done. I was not sent a bill for two years by a water company and I did not realise it until they send two years worth of bills. I wrote to them and told them that if they had wanted me to organise their office procedures for them I would have done so for a very small charge. They wrote off half the bill

I hate them. I switched to Atlantic Gas and Elec, lovely people. I did not have a meter reading for ages, like it is all estimated. Lived here 12 years, only on elec. tho' but always got a rebate. All of a sudden, they hike up five times in a year their prices, and I had to do kettle tests, to see if the meter was wrong and all sorts of peak rate phoning. Eventually they said I owed (no comparison to your problem) 156 quid. My bills have nev er been like that, and also, because of personal problems, I have been cutting down...anyway, they settled for 90, with all the ear ache I gave em....and now I am with the Altantic Gas and Elec, based somewhere near Wales, but it seems to work. Good luck. I mean in the olden days two years ago, men would read meters every quarter.....where have they gone.....now it is all estimated, and over. good luck.

Clearly the billing isn't all that accurate now, but you have let it get out of hand since you knew it was wrong a year ago. You could have provided a customer reading at any time. Youve used the gas so pay for it.

As any solicitor will point out, you must read ALL of the small print in the supply contract you have with Powergen. This will then determine whether you may have any grounds to proceed against them by civil action. Sorry to have to point this out, but by neglecting to follow up your earlier concerns, you have succeeded in digging a bigger hole for yourself. However, now that all of that is water-under-the-bridge, you must continue to take legal advice and perhaps, with the proper communication with Powergen, you may be able to reach an agreement by way of making them an offer of settlement.

They may well say its your fault as you should have given them a meter reading that was accurate sooner. Dont take it, get advice from the citizens advice beaureau and get an appointment with a solicitor if you need to.
Good luck, its hard fighting such a large company as an individual!
