The lunar eclipse is the shadow of the earth making the moon go dark. So the sun earth and moon have to be exactly in a line, with the earth between the sun and moon. But if the sun, earth and moon are close to being lined up, with the earth between the sun and moon, then the moon will appear full. So you end up with the moon being full for a lunar eclipse.
