Welcome home !!!. Its very easy to get a pre-paid card in india.
As per the law, you need to provide two passport size photographs and proof of address ( should be an indian address). After providing these at any of the shops that sell these pre-paid cards, you can very easliy activate and top up the balance. The tricky part is , it will work for the first couple of days without a problem and then the verification has to be done by the service provider. For the verification process to happen you need to be present at the address while someone comes over to verify your identity and presence. If you think all this is a hassle, i suggest one of your friends or family in india to get a pre-paid card on thier name and have it ready for you. This should be the easiest option.

Have a great trip...

If you have an unlocked gsm phone then getting a sim in India is not a problem. There are many prepaid sims these days that are available at a cheap rate that you could use for your stay in India (being an nri should not matter). But if your phone is locked then it may be hard to find someone to unlock it. My mom was recently visiting and I gave her a t-mobile nokia phone and she was not able to find someone to unlock it. Try findinf an unlocked phone on ebay or you can find a second hand cheap phone in India too.
