Keeneengineering.com is the largest supplier of gold mining products for the recreational miner. I recommend the sp14 for adults and a 10 inch cleanup pan for kids. Also get a couple of sucker or snuffer bottles. Tie a piece of brightly colored yarn to the neck of the bottle and make a long loop and tie it again . So it hangs about mid chest. This will keep your bottle handy. Otherwise it could fall in the water and float away. Putting it in your pocket will make it squirt you every time you bend over. Possibly squirting out gold. Then go to www.49ermike.com click on where to find gold then click on California then click on your county. And read the tons of information on local places to go. www.gpaa.com has a good forum also with an active chat room (8pm) best time. and www.goldgold.com is an club based in happy camp California called the new 49ers. It is a great club . As is the gpaa. good luck

I see quite a few Google hits for the search phrase: pan for gold california
There appears to be gold in Nevada County, Calavaras County, Trinity County, and many more locations. Check the link for a couple Nevada County locations below. You can also search Google maps for places to pan gold in or near SF. I pasted a sample google map link too.
I would recommend you let your boys do their own research and choose their spot. Just set ground rules for them, i.e. how close, terrain, cost. Deciding where to go is a huge part of prospecting. They will appreciate whatever they find more if you allow them this "buy-in".

Mmmm, its been a few years, so I dont remember the name anymore, but there are a bunch of mountain regions within about an hours drive from San Francisco. These mountain areas host natural caves, spelunking and things like that. There are several in that area that also have streams or rivers running by and they have gold panning in them as well as an attraction.
If I remember correctly, we found one that was listed as having large Pyrite deposits in the caves and that one had a very active gold panning area next to it.

i'm no longer conscious of any gold interest around you. you are able to continually attempt, of path. you like a sandy creek with flowing water, ideally close to a mountain. in basic terms after a hurricane is ultimate. in case you will discover the thank you to get to the different area of the Owens Valley in CA you will have lots greater efficient luck. everywhere up close to Lake Tahoe may be solid. The previous Gold Rush areas may be greater efficient yet. solid luck.
