i want to act in plays, everyone thinks im a good actress, and my sister was telling me that i should get prrivate singing lessons to help me in theatre, because i dont sing good. my piano teacher told me she would give the names of some voice teachers (ppl who teach you how to sing and use your voice correctly) so i could take lessons. should i take them? or just act in non-musical plays?

It's really up to you! I've been involved in theatre for the last twelve years-one thing I've learned is that you have to do what you're comfortable with. It's always a good idea to expand your repertoire, but if you hate to sing or dance, don't try to. Make sure you enjoy what you do. Work on your strongest craft(s) and make it the best it can possibly be. There are quite a few directors who will bypass skilled singers-weak actors for those who can really perform but might not be as musically gifted. Lessons will definitely help you if you want a leading role in a musical, but if you don't mind being in the musical's chorus, then don't sweat it. I've done both straight plays and musicals, and I'd have to say in all honesty that musicals are more fun--you can learn more in a musical.

Private voice lessons (with the right teacher) are a blast, but they can also be very expensive and rather time-consuming, so be sure that it's really what you want before you make any concrete decisions. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me at uctheatrescholar@yahoo.com. Best of luck to you!

By all means, take the lessons. You can be an "actress who sings" (like Nicole Kidman) or a "singer who acts" (like Bette Midler). The more skills you have the better, from juggling to dancing, but the ones that are most helpful are those that are of the most utility on the stage. So -- singing, dancing, voice lessons (different from singing, this is for speech and voice projection) are all very valuable.

And take a juggling lesson just for the fun of it.

Agreed the world's a stage, and you got to act out your role, but without pretending, or in your words, ACTING. What's the need to ACT out some other person's role when you have your script well defined? (Read, your destination clearly written down). When you know your destination, all you have to do is to decide the course of the journey to be taken with your own mind/heart. Never act/pretend for others' sake, it's definitely not worth the effort. Tomorrow, when you leave this world, it's your spirit that is going to be judged (in some way) for its sense of wisdom. So perform well in the drama and remember to stand out and be yourself!!

You should really just focus on getting a quality eduction and let this pipe dream go. If you were anywhere near as good as you think you are you wouldn't have to be asking a bunch of strangers for advice now would you. There is an old saying The cream always rises to the top. If you are that good you will get found if you are not you will get lost...

YES! It is always helpful to get voice lessons. Not only will it help you in musicals but it also will help you to project your speaking voice. This is coming from a girl who is in theatre and choir! Besides, singing is fun! (note my screen name)

From an actress- Never limit yourself. Learn to do many things well, it opens you up to more possibilities. The Arts are unstable, you never know what different talent will earn you a big break...I had to learn to ride horses, dance, mime, juggle, etc. But my money came from writing...go figure.

Try out for any part--big or small--in a non-musical play first...then you'll know whether or not you like being on stage. Take it one step at a time. Good luck!

take them!! musicals are very popular. of course it's your choice on whether you want to be in them. in some musicals, you need to be good at dancing too, but i would definitely recommend singing lessons.
