+ You really should give a little more info as to what you intend to do. Are you ocean cruising or sailing? or just putting around for a summer day in protected waters? or are you rowing or paddling?
I have just purchased a 16 1/2 foot Tracker deep Vee guide boat aluminum with a 15HP merc. It is as fast as I want to go, so I have found my boat. I added a second bank of oars so two people can row at once if desired. I like to pull the engine to get over sand banks and up small creeks and such to the really good fishing spots where others don't go. It takes about 1 foot seas well as the sides are pretty high for a boat that is this light and small. It won't sink even if filled all the way with water. Just what I want.
My old boat was a seaway 26'
before that I had a PennYan
Cris Craft makes a good boat?
what are you intending to do? Water ski?

There are many good brands out there to choose from. If you are looking to spend around 20,000 - 35,000 Then your best bets are: Bayliner, Sea Ray, Glastron, Maxum and Tahoe. The more you pay the more comforts you will receive some boats that offer those are: Cobalt, Formula, Kachina and Sleekcraft. Also Bayliners Are very good boats now even know in the 80's they received a bad name the have got there **** together and fixed all those problems. I own a Bayliner and am very happy with it.

Malibu, Centurion, Mastercraft- all good ski boats
Howard, Ultra- custom boatskins of boat you want. Talk to people at the local boat hang-out and ask them what they think of their boats. Stay away from Bayliner. Does not hold up. Check out the boat shows.
Remember, 90 percent (give or take) of boats have Mercruiser or Volvo drive units in them. When you look at boats, look at the quality of the interior, the instrumentation, the gel coat and the overall fit and finish of the boat.

Unfortuneately you have not provided us with enough information to really help you. In every boat search one question needs to be asked first. "how do I plan to use the boat" This involves alot of things, Trailer it or dock it? Sleep aboard or just day trips? Head no head? Inland lake, or coastal waters. Last but not least the owners depth of pocket; ie how much cash can you afford.
But with the information given I too will answer your question, Go buy a Grand Banks or a Nordhavn

Depends on size but for a fishing boat 16ft aluminum tracker boats with 40 or 50 hp are fine here in midwest.

If you want a fun cruiser type of boat I'd say Sea Ray, Bayliner, Hatteras, or Maxum. If you want a fishing boat then Lund, Boston Whaler or Triton.

In the Small Runabout category (16-19 feet), Crownline has the top rating, with Chaparral a close second. Bayliner had the lowest rating in this class.
