I want it to sort of be like a "promise" ring. What's a nice, sophisticated ring for under $300? I'd like something celtic, claddagh/celtic knots, etc. But any suggestions would be good.

My cousin's wedding ring is stunning. It is made out if titanium & it looks like someone has taken a pipe & cut an piece off the end. It is not rounded or anything. Simple, sophisticated & truly amazing. He has gotten more compliments on that ring than you would think possible. I know it is plain & does not have a design, but I thought the titanium part may interest you.
Happy shopping!

Get what you like, everything you mentioned sounds good. But, shop around and look.
Now, here what I will add; "What work he do"?
IF, he work with his hands like in mechanics, think 10 Karat.
Anything else 12-14 Karat good.
Gold is about 24 Karat, which is very soft. They mix it with a base metal like Silver, Nickle or Copper to give it strength. The lower the Karat number the more base metal, but, it more stronger too. When I worked in Mechanics I wore a 10 Karat Gold ring. Anything else kept getting bent out of round and had to be re-shaped/formed.
