It is the name of a caste in Hindu society.In olden times castes were framed on the basis of work they were set to perform or performed.Chamar used to be those who obtained leather from dead animals(animal Hide) and processed it for the use of a variety of materials. One can be chamar by caste yet the Prime Minister. There is no taboo anywhere except in the minds of some who talk of about reservation and votes.

That, I think, is a name of the lower caste, in North India. Jim Corbett in his book, on his experiences in the jungles of UP, narrates his account of a Chamar, whom he gave a job and who remained loyal, faithful and honest till the end.That is a very moving account. Generally, the people from the lower caste are very honest, hard working and men of integrity.

the actual meaning of chamar means cobbler in hindi and urdu, or one deal with hide and leather..

I heard this word used by bengali people--as I am not acquinted with the bad words--I cant tell you the exact meaning --but for sure they use use it in a bad purpose .Never listen to those bad words--they are for the 3rd class people.
