1. for a general reference Mobil/Exxon last quarter got a mild slap on the wrist for making in excess of 10 billion dollars profit, check CNN for exact dollar amount. Price varies too much for a detailed answer to your question - volume can be looked up by vendor quarterly reports.
2. Yes there are taxes - a lot. It varies per state that is why the same gas station in one location is different then another, this can also be per county or city due to taxes. Over a third of the price of a gallon is for tax reasons.
3. no need to. the governmnet already sponsers with grants serveral research projects on alt. fuel and alt transportation projects.

I do not have the answer to your first questions, but I can tell you that I would be TOTALLY opposed to another tax. We do not need the government taking our money and using it for what they deem best. If you support alternative energy research, then invest your money in it!!

The more money the public can keep, the more they have to use in ways they see fit. If I want to support something, and I have the money, I can chose to do so. If I do not see value in something, I will not put my money into it. With the government taking the money and making the choice, I do not have the money to support what I think is important!!
