Lets add a scenario - the persons been seeing a personal trainer for 2months and is about to compete in their first triathlon - the trainer sets a goal, and the person knows they can do it. They start the race and think to themselves, "I have nothing to prove" and doesnt compete as seriously as they should of? - Your view on this comment?

While I don't think I've said that in a long time (if I ever said it), I'm kind of one of those people who lives my life that. For me, what it means is that I do what I do out of my own motivation, caring, ambition, energy, or whatever else drives me. I don't do it to prove anything to anybody.

I know who I am, have worked hard to figure out/build who I am, and I live with the peace of a quiet self-confidence. An example of how this goes is: When I was a new driver I wanted to buy a car. My girlfriend of the same age didn't have a car either. I got a good deal on a maroon sedan that had low mileage and had been owned and cared for well by an older person. My girlfriend, always one to need to maintain a certain image of how cool she was, told me she'd rather have no car than an "old lady car". She went on to do without transporation (other than what I provided) for another year or so until she could get a "cooler" car. I, on the other hand, sure enough of myself not to worry about who thought I was cool, had the benefits of having a car to get myself around in.

Other than occasionally wanting to prove something to myself, I am not driven by needing to prove to anyone in this world that I am one thing or another. There is an enormous sense of satisfaction, solidness, and core-self to know you are motivated from within and not driven by a need to show other people that you're one thing or another.

And that's what it means. I noticed people on here seem to see it as a bad thing. Anyone who truly understands the meaning of it knows its a good thing.

thats a good question. I think maybe they are tired of making everyone believe or trust them, so they shut off themselves, making others feel as if they either don't want to proof or they don't have to proof (if that makes sense :p).
