I mean they won't offer me any "paid" maternity leave. I need to figure out how I am going to pay the bills why I am out with the baby,....I'm a single parent.

There are multiple kinds of leave and it is confusing to get straight. I live in California and my employer offered no leave but I got the following:

There is a Federal act, FMLA, which protects your job for 12 weeks for the birth of a child, caring for an ill relative, etc. This protects your job only, and does not mandate any pay. http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/fmla/

California offers 6 weeks of disability for normal pregnancy. This includes time you miss before the baby is born and it may be extended if you are disabled longer (like with a C-Section).

Subsequently, you can receive 6 additional weeks of disability under the California Paid Family leave act. SO CAN THE FATHER. I know you mention you are a single parent, but I think this is a great fact to get out there.

Maternity Leave is paid through your Short Term Disability plan. It's the same thing. Every company is different about when you can leave and how you will be paid. Most cover up to 6 weeks. On some plans, the clock starts ticking when the baby is born. Others, when you leave. Still some require you to use 2 weeks of your accumulated sick leave and vacation time before they start to pay any disability pay.
Check it out with your HR dept.

yes, This is what maternity leave is...its just not called that, this is what I did, you first have to exaust all your sick time, vacation time, personal time etc, Then you apply for short term disability, usually they will pay 4 weeks at 100% then after that 60% for however long your company says.
So basically i got about 7 weeks paid. Good Luck!

I dont know where you live, but you should check on that....
I think that its a law that you get some type of maternity leave.
They dont necessarily have to pay you, but they do have
to give you like 6 weeks off. Also, I know in the state of California
you can get paid time from the state. My sister in law had
a baby in March & I think she got paid 6 or 8 weeks. That is ontop of another 6 weeks paid by the company that she works for.

Under the Family and Medical Leave Act they are required to give you up to 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave.

You would be best to check with your Human Resources department where you work.I would assume though that in order to get any short term disability you would have to be paying for that benefit.I know where my son works,he pays into a short term disability plan,if he was female, maternity pay would fall under that.If you don't pay into the plan,I'm not sure you would get anything except for accumulated sick days and vacation.

They do not have short term disability for pregnancy because it is not a disability. However if your company chooses to lay you off due to pregnancy you can go to the unemployment office and file for unemployment. My best suggestion is to work as long as you can and save some money out of what you are earning now for a safety net.

Most short term disability plans have a 10 month waiting period on pregnancy. They don't want you to be pregnant when you sign up for it. If you are not already pregnant, I suggest you look into AFLAC immediately.

I believe every company by law has to offer you maternity leave under the family medical leave act. When you come back they have to have job for you equal to the one you left.
