Medical causes of dehydration in humans
In humans, dehydration can be caused by a wide range of diseases and states that impair water homeostasis in the body. These include:

External or stress-related causes
Prolonged physical activity without consuming adequate water, especially in a hot environment
Prolonged exposure to dry air, e.g., in high-flying airplanes (5-15% r.h.)
Survival situations, especially desert survival conditions
Blood loss or hypotension due to physical trauma
Diarrhea
Hyperthermia
Shock
Vomiting
Infectious diseases
Cholera
Gastroenteritis
Shigellosis

Symptoms and prognosis
Symptoms may include headaches similar to what is experienced during a hangover, a sudden episode of visual snow, decreased blood pressure (hypotension), and dizziness or fainting when standing up due to orthostatic hypotension. Untreated dehydration generally results in delirium, unconsciousness, and in extreme cases death.

A dehydrated baby is very serious as a baby can die or become handicapped as a result - though it can also be difficult to diagnose if the dehydration is not severe.

Any of these signs could indicate that your baby is dehydrated or is becoming dehydrated:
• Goes more than six hours without a wet diaper

• Has dark yellow, strong-smelling urine

• Is lethargic

• Has a dry, parched mouth and lips

• Doesn't shed any tears while crying

Signs that a baby may be seriously dehydrated:

• Sunken eyes

• Hands and feet that feel cold and look splotchy

• Lightheadedness, dizziness, or delirium

• Excessive sleepiness or fussiness

If you're concerned but don't think your baby is seriously dehydrated, give your baby's doctor a call for advice. She may want to see your baby to make sure he's okay. If she decides that he's mildly dehydrated, she may instruct you to give him a special liquid to replenish both the water and salts (electrolytes) his body has lost.

To prevent dehydration, it's important to make sure your baby's receiving plenty of fluids, especially on very hot days and when he's ill. Continue to breastfeed or bottle-feed him and, if he's 4 months or older, you can supplement with a little water (about 4 ounces a day until he's eating solid food, more after that).

If the babies tongue is not moist and "shiny", the soft spot is "sunken in", and if there are fewer wet diapers than normal for your baby, then your baby is probably dehydrated.
Does your baby have a fever? Have you tried to give the baby pedialyte?? That tends to help...DO NOT give Gatorade or Powerade!!!!!!!!!!!
If you get real worried, call your doctor's office (most have an answering service). See what the doctor recommends.
If this persists, you might need to go into the emergency room.

If your baby is throwing up alot you need to call your pediatrician. You can feed the baby pedialyte in the interem it is like a liquid saline iv it replaces much needed electrolytes. The physician is the only one though who can pinpoint the cause of the dehydration

Their soft spot will be indented. Their lips will look dry. They will be lethargic (tired). If you pinch the skin on their little hand it will hold the pinched shape a bit rather than snap right back to normal.

If you suspect your child is dehydrated offer them water, milk, juice, or even fruit, and call your pediatritian immediately.

Yes, can be very dangerous and can happen really quickly, eg. if it's hot or baby is poorly. Signs include: bags under eyes, dry mouth, indented fontanelle, dry nappies, and skin that looses its elasticity.

Check their fontanelle, and see if it's dented, it's at the top of the scalp, where it hasn't formed yet, also when the baby cries if there are no tears...Also if they have had a dry nappy for ages

Hope everything is ok.

I added pedialite into their diet ASAP.
Each child is so different.

This can be a serious problem, mine loved to drink over eating, so problem was getting him to eat enough in my case.

Sometimes milk is not enough.
Water is not enough.
Gatorade is dangerous, so don't use it at all.

Good luck!
