There are two square roots of a number, the positive root and the negative root. So the answers are 14 and -14. Both 14*14 and (-14)(-14) = 196, so this confirms our answer.

If you want just the positive root (the one your calculator will give you), the answer is 14.

If one of your twins had 14 bags, and the second twin put 14 snacks in each bag, there would be a total of 196 snacks.

The easiest way to do it without a calculator is to break down the number in its prime factors.

196 = 2^2 * 7^2

Then you can easily find the square root by regrouping.

196 = (2*7)^2

Sqrt (196) = 14 and of course -14 too.
