The American League expanded the length of the season in 1961 when the league expanded by two teams with the new Washington Senators and the Los Angeles Angels.

The National League expanded the season in 1962 when the New York Mets and Houston Colt .45s joined the league.

Prior to expansion each team would play the other 7 teams 22 times per year. From 1961 to 1968 each team would play the other 9 teams 18 times per year. From 1969 when the leagues expanded again and split into two divisions you would play the teams in your division 18 times and the teams in the other division 12 times per year.
