I have a file which I have created in windows media player format and I want to write it to a DVD for uni.
How is this possible - do you need special software and if so is there somewhere that you can download it free ?
Also - do you have to have a certain type of computer ?
Any help would be wonderfull

Thanx

You need a file converter. You must first find out what file format your windows media is and then convert it to DVD. You might do a search for .wma (if this is the file format) to DVD converter...

Now, while I don't have expert status when it comes to the Windows Media Player, I am pretty sure it is not yet able to do DVDs, it does CDs really well, and it can rip music from a CD and put it onto an MP3 if you have the plug-in, which you can get at Windows Market Place for the Media Plus pack, which has a lot of super cool features and programs which is included in the Media Edition 2005 OS, which is really Windows XP Pro with the Media enhancements added. It only costs 19.95 for the entire package, so it is well worth the price.

I also know you will need to make sure any CD or DVD is campatable for linix, or a mac, which if you have a drive with "Make Compatable" on it then you are good to go. Just go to the help section on the Media Player or the help section for the Drive, and it should explain how to do this.

Now, I know that Windows Movie Maker does not have the capasity to burn Video or Photo slide shows to DVD as of this point in time. Perhaps it will in the Vista OS, but not now. So, I may be wrong, but I would assume if the Windows Movie Maker can't write to DVD, then the Media player wouldn't be able to either.

I have read other questions and answers here regarding this issue and some responses put that Nero software program in those answers too. So, this person who wrote before I did may be sending you to the right place, but I think it would have been better if the person had provided a link you could click and go straight there. Put Nero in Goggle and see what it comes up with. Goggle is great for finding just about anything.

Sorry I don't have more detailed help than this, but maybe somebody else will answer with a more fully usable response. Good luck and have a great day!

p.s. I have a supior DVD/CD readable/writable drive, 16X double layered light scribe and it does not have a Nero software attached to it. I do have the ability to drag and drop files, but I don't think it contains a specific software which allows conversions like this. I would be jazzed to find out it did, but I don't think it does. I think you will need to go and download and install it yourself. Look in your Add/Remove control panel program and see if Nero shows up there, mine does not show this software program, which is why I am darn certain I don't have it, and I bought this computer only four months ago and my drive is brand new, not bundled with the Nero software. Just thought you should know about that, as I don't want to accidently mislead you. The best thing to do is just look in Add/Remove and see if there, if not you don't have it and will need to get it from the website. I am not certain if this is free or not, but if not it sounds worth the cost. Again, good luck and a great day.

p.s.s I just read extensive material on the Windows Movie Maker and you CAN'T make DVDs on it!! You can do everything else except burn DVD video. You can transfer video from DVD onto the computer, to render into a movie, but at this time the only limitation Windows Movie Maker has it its inability to transfer back to a DVD. You can use a CD, transfer back into a digital video recorder, compress for websites like YouTube, and various other formatting, but NOT DVD rendering. I know it is odd that a so called movie maker is unable to render back to a DVD, I thought it very odd when I read this, but it is true nonetheless. Sorry folks, read the book Windows XP Inside Out by Microsoft Press which has an entire chapter on the Windows Movie Maker. It states that if a user wishes to render back to DVD one has to purchase a third party software program for that purpose. Get thi book, it also has an entire chapter on the Media player, and has so many other issues on the OS and how to get the best use out of it. I have read this book cover to cover countless times as there is simply so much information it is impossible to keep it all in the brain in only a few readings. However, it a super book with great infomation and lots of extras in the companion CD, and lots of referrals to other sourses for more infomation, like the Microsoft Knowlege base and many other sites. It is invaluable and well worth the fifty bucks.

You can only make a disk viewable on your computer, not a t.v or a dvd player.

Most DVD players can play music CD's, which you can burn from Windows Media Player onto a regular CD-R. If you want it on a DVD to get more room for music, you could try using a recordable DVD instead of a CD in Windows Media Player. If that doesn't work you could always use Windows Movie Maker (free) to create a movie with a black screen (or have some fun w/ pictures and stuff) and burn it as a DVD movie, but then you'd still only have about 1 hr of audio available, so you might as well stick with CDs in that case.

The best and simplest way to do it is to use Nero, the most common CD/DVD burning software around. It should brun anything on your computer which can play in media player. The vast majority of writing DVD drives will be sold with Nero DVD burning software. Simply put the blank DVD in, select DVD and video DVD, add the file and click burn! (NB Burn it as a video disc, not a data disc. A data disc will only be read by computers, but a video disc will be read by DVD players.)

If you don't have Nero, you might be able to download it for free. I've found a free trial at http://www.download.com/Nero-7-Ultra-Edition/3000-2646_4-10582585.html?tag=lst-0-1

Good luck

Sorry Gem, you can't, it's a computer coding only. The only way is to play on your comp and video it with a camcorder.
