I heard it's so hard not because the material is complicated but because it is such a large amount of information that you must know in a short amount of time.

I'm guessing that there are only a certain number of people who could handle the amount of information that must be retained. In professional programs usually material builds on previous material, therefore it is very important for a student to actually learn cumulatively.
