My wisdom teeth have been coming in for about 3 years. Only about once a year do they bother me, and my dentist recommended last year that I have them removed. I am 23 weeks pregnant and my doctor said there was no problem as to why i shouldn't be able to get them taken out. For the past week I have not been able to eat, sleep, or talk very much at all. Today, of all days, I get my range of motion in my mouth back and the swelling went down. I have been taking tylenol to help with the pain and it seems to work for a short period of time. At first the dentist told his assistant to set me up with a referral to an oral surgeon then he looked at my teeth and gave me some mouth wash and said we should wait until after I have the baby. I am due in Feb and they made my next appt for April. My other teeth are not being affected right now, and the pain is almost gone. Should I make an appt with the oral surgeon or trust the dentist I just met and wait until after the baby is born?

It is better to have dental problems taken care of in your 2nd and 3rd trimester..In that case, you should be okay. You just won't have the drugs regularly administered to you as you would if you weren't pregnant. No x-rays either. Good Luck! there is less chance of getting an infection by getting it pulled than leaving it in. The bacteria in your mouth could harm the baby. get the thing yanked, then go to the gyno and see if he/she thinks you should take antibiotics

That's a tough decision to make. I would probably try to wait untiil after the baby is born. I know that if something went wrong with the anesthesia, I would never forgive myself. But it's really a personal decsion. If you haven't, go talk to your OBGYN and see what they say. Find out from the oral surgeon what types of anesthesia they would give you - and don't forget about the pain meds they will prescribe after the surgery. I would really trust my OB's opinion rather than my dentist! I am 30 weeks pg and when I went in for my regular dental checkup and cleaning, they made me wait at least 30 minutes while they got in touch with someone in my Dr's office to make sure it was OK to clean my teeth... JUST A CLEANING!!!

Good luck - and I hope your teeth feel better!

I would talk with your OBGYN as well as the oral surgeon.

Everything I have ever heard is that you should not have oral surgery while you are pregnant.

In all honesty, being pregnant causes more bleeding, swelling and potential for issues. You can't treat the pain the way you would if you weren't pregnant and well... Your body won't heal as well since all your energy is going to your little one right now.

I would avoid surgery as much as possible and quite frankly, I can't imagine any surgeon wanting the liability of working on a pregnant mommy unless he or she absolutely had to.

I believe I would wait ,why go through all that pain because I don't think the oral surgeon will be able to give you much for the pain since you are pregnant.Maybe make the appointment just for the discussion about the plans he has for you.

I would do a little bit of both. It is possible to have dental surgery (even with drugs) while you are pregnant. The doctor just needs to watch what he gives you and how much of it is given. Call your obgyn up and ask what her opinion is. If your teeth are bothering you, it may be more convienient to get them out now, rather than after the baby is born and you are super busy. Talk to both doctors... if they decide surgery is not the best option for you, go with the dentist's advice and postpone.

I would wait. I wen through the same thing. I had my son last year and am just now getting them removed. They have to give you meds and I didn't want that to affect my baby, so I waited. If the pain comes back, stronger, yea I would consider it sooner.

you should wait! It is not healthy for the baby for you to be "knocked out" by general anesthesia. I strongly say to wait. After all, the Dentist is a doctor who went to school, and should know what is best; if you have any more questions on it, you can call your ob/gyn and ask him/her.

You are trusting a bunch of non specialists on Yahoo answers to give you an answer over the expert advice of a dentist? Nobody here went to dental school how would we know what is best? You got the answer from the one who knows. Go with the expert's advice.

dont put your baby at risk. just a reminder when your pregnant everything hurts 2 times more than when your not keep that in mind. You should wait and stop taking tylenol or anything else like that your baby is taking all of that in and its not good for her.
