Is she a little disturbed? What do you mean by dis functional:irrational?Crazy?Obsessed?what?
I would first try anything to help:even for years on end,but if nothing helps:i would cut her completely out of my life.
And that is what I have done. She is not even in my mind anymore.So.there you have an answer of a person who knows about this,
My advice to you :get her a doctor or shrink or whatever,
Give it a go:it is still your mom.
But,if over time nothing changes:take a decision that fits you.
Don't listen to others, listen to your heart.

That is a very difficult decision. Mine is disfunctional as well, BIG TIME! I have just moved out and still maintain communication and all, but i certainly don't trust her for anything. She's nutts. If I were you, i wouldn't cut her out of my life, because she birthed you and raised you, BUT I would get away!

No, but set limits to the communication. Maybe only talk by phone for a set number of minutes. Make it clear of what you will and will not accept and when she crosses the line let her know and tell her you are stopping that conversation. Remember that you can control how you react to what she says.

I don't know many moms who aren't disfunctional at some level, so give her a shot. SHe's the only mom you'll have.
