I think that you have formatted the harddrive and after that you usually need the drivers for the soundcard. Find out what soundcard you have and search on the web for the latest drivers.

Assuming that you have your speaker system plugged into the correct jack (check this first), you will want to check the following items:

In your tool tray at the bottom of your screen you should have a little SOUND icon...Click on this and when the little window opens, move the volume up to about half way setting...That may be all it takes.

If not open your Control Panel Window, and click on Sound Effects or similar title . That should take you to
a window which shoes all the options and settings for Sound. If your software is similar to mine, it will even have a test button where you can test the speakers. This is very helpful to use in troubleshooting.

On my computer I have Sandra 2002 by SiSoft. It has a section which provides System Information and even a module which is specific to testing audio portions of computers. If you don't have it, I recommend that you download that for analysis of your system. Helpful tips and recommendations are made by Sandra 2002.

Norton Utilities also has some good test features but you will have to purchase that software.

Hope this helps.

Zahbudar

There really is no way to diagnose the problem without knowing a few things. What kind of computer is it? What Operating system do you use? What was wrong with it when you took it in for repair.

There are some simple things you can do for now:
If you use a windows xp system there will be a speaker (very tiny) icon in the bottom right corner of your screen (you may have to expand the tool bar to reveal all of the Icons. Click on it an a volume level should pop up. Make sure the lever is turned up and that the Mute check box is NOT checked.

Probably no driver installed for your sound card. To check, go to Start (I'm assuming you have windows XP), right click on My Computer and go to properties. Go to hardware and click on Device Manager. If there is no sound card or audio device listed here, or if the audio device listing has a little exclamation mark next to it, then this is your problem.

If you know the type of sound card you have, do a quick search on the net for drivers, and then just download one.
If you don't know the make of your sound card, it gets a little tricky.
If your computer happens to be a pre-assmebled one (say from Dell or something) check the model number of your PC against the model numbers on their website. They should have a list of the standard components, which you can use to find your sound card type. Then just go and download a driver.
Or you could open her up and just take a look at the sound card.

Double check that the speakers are plugged in to the correct port. Also make sure they have not muted the sound in windows. If after checking that. Take it back to where you had the work done and have them correct the issue. If it was working before you took it to them then they cause a problem while working on it.

That happened to me too! I took my comp in cause the "motherboard" blew up. I was told by Dell that they probably forgot to re-install the hard-drive for the sound. You can still listen through head phones, but the speakers wont work. You can take it back to the place you got it fixed, and they should be able to re-install the sound.

A great multitude of things could be wrong! First thing I would check is to make sure you plugged the speakers into the right jack! You might state what repairs were made to get an accurate answer also!
